You’ve probably heard of IELTS, but for those who are yet to know what it is and what it is for, you should continue on reading. IELTS is an acronym, which stands for International English Language Testing System. Basically, IELTS is an English proficiency exam to test your knowledge of English — how well you can read, write, speak and understand English.
Why Take the IELTS?
If you’re considering taking the IELTS, it’s possibly because you’re planning to study abroad or you’re planning to move to another country or for some other purpose. The IELTS is primarily taken by students planning to study in a university or college in an English-speaking environment or to move to countries like Canada or Australia, where IELTS is the English proficiency exam and which is accepted for official purposes by them. Cambridge Institute provides excellent coaching for IELTS in Ahmedabad.
The IELTS is also requested in times when people have already immigrated to countries such as Canada or Australia to certify your English language ability in terms of your profession.
Type of Exam
There are 2 types of exam: the General Exam and the Academic Exam.
The Academic Exam is a slightly harder exam because it is meant for academic purposes. That is if you’re planning to go to a university or college, you are asked to take the Academic Test. The Reading Section and the Writing Section is slightly different in the academic one and slight more difficult in terms of English level.
The 2nd type of IELTS exam is the General Exam. Those who are planning to immigrate mostly take the General IELTS. It is a little bit easier but not completely easy. It’s still challenging, you still have to prepare for it in order to do well.
IELTS Band Score Scale
In IELTS, if you get a 9, that would be fantastic because that is considered the highest score which you can get in IELTS exam. The IELTS scores is represented in terms of bands form 0 all the way to 9. If you get a 9, that would mean you are an expert user of the English language. Cambridge Institute provides excellent coaching for IELTS in Ahmedabad. Call our expert faculty today to get the best result in IELTS exam. Call: 91 9824393391, 9998806666.
Sections of the Exam
There are 4 sections of the exam: Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking. It’s about 2 hours and 45 minutes long. First, there is the Listening Section in both the Academic and General IELTS, and takes about half an hour. Then in the Reading and Writing Sections, the Academic and General exams are different; both sections will take up to 60 minutes each. In the Speaking section, this is interview with an actual examiner and takes about 11-14 minutes, and it’s the same for both Academic and General IELTS. See above for illustration.
Scoring
You will get 4 separate scores in each of these sections, so you could get a 7 in listening or 6 in reading and so on. You could get different scores in each section. And finally, you get a fifth score, which is an overall score for the entire IELTS.
Depending on the purpose of taking the exam, you might be asked for an overall score or you might be asked for a particular section or some combination. For example, if you’re planning to study journalism in a university, they might care very much how well you read, so they might request that you get a 7 or 8 in your reading or writing section even though your overall score in other sections might be lower.

IELTS MYTHS:
We at CAMBRIDGE INSTITUE strongly believe these are just IELTS MYTHS.
IELTS is too difficult
We at Cambridge Institute believe IELTS is no more difficult than any other exam. The questions are straightforward and designed to assess how well you can use your English – not to trick you or test your opinions. As with any exam, IELTS requires thorough preparation. Also, remember that there is no pass or fail in IELTS. The results are reported on a 9-band scale (1 being the lowest, 9 being the highest). This scale has remained consistent for over 20 years. The score you need is determined by the requirements of your visa or the institution/ organization to which you are applying. Always remember to check what score you need before you take the test.
If I sit the test in Rajkot or Baroda centre than Ahmedabad or Mumbai , I might get a better result.
This is a common myth. However it is important to understand that the IELTS test will be the same level of difficulty wherever you sit the test. Think about where you will feel most confident taking the test. It is important to recognize that good meals and good sleep in the lead-up to your test will help you perform your best. Also consider how early you need to travel on test day to reach the test center.
Keep in mind that all IELTS examiners in each country receive the same high level of training and are closely monitored to ensure they rate your responses consistently wherever you sit the test. Just call Cambridge Institute, Ahmedabad to achieve your targeted IELTS score.
If I smile and make the examiner laugh in my Speaking test, I may get a better mark.
Smiling can help you feel relaxed which in turn might help you perform better. Every examiner is trained and monitored closely to be fair to every candidate and assess your level of English only. The examiners will not give you more or fewer marks if you are smiling and laughing,
I will lose marks if I don’t speak with an Australian, American or British accent.
You are not expected to change your accent for the IELTS test. Instead, focus on speaking clearly and at a natural pace so that the examiner can understand you. Practicing your English every day and listening to different native speaker accents will help you to pronounce difficult words more clearly.
If I write more than the word limit in my Writing test, I will get more marks.
The minimum word limit is important. You must write at least 150 words for Task 1 and at least 250 words for Task 2. If you write less than this, you will lose marks. However if you write more, this does not mean you will gain marks. Rather it is more important that you use correct English, appropriate grammar, a wide range of vocabulary and sentence structures.
If the opinions I express in my Writing or Speaking test are different to the examiner, I might lose marks.
In your Writing and Speaking test, there are no right or wrong opinions. The examiner is assessing how well you can use your English to report information and express ideas.
If I keep practicing sample questions I will get a better bandscore
Practicing sample tests will help you learn what is expected in each part of the test. This is good test preparation in order to maximize the English skills you have. However, remember that to improve your English you need to use English in everyday contexts – speak it with your friends, write notes and email in English, read English newspapers, listen to English radio. If you feel you need help with your English, you should also consider taking an English course. Just call Cambridge Institute, Ahmedabad to achieve your targeted IELTS score.
I’ve heard it is easy to cheat at IELTS.
IELTS is protected by sophisticated and multi-layered security measures to prevent cheating in order to protect you and the organizations that accept your results.
IELTS is harder than other English tests.
Thousands of educational institutions, employers, and professional registration bodies accept IELTS because it is a high quality and fair test. This is why IELTS is also accepted by more governments for migration purposes than any other test. The institution/organization you are applying to will determine what level of English you need.
IF I APPEAR THROUGH IDP AUSTRALIA THAN BRITISH COUNCIL, I GET HALF OR ONE BAND MORE IN IELTS.
This is again myth with Gujarati students. Whatever is your capacity that only you will get whether you sit in the test through IDP AUSTRALIA or BRITISH COUNCIL. Cambridge Institute is the first institute to publicize this and inform the students about the reality. We are striving hard to inform the Gujarati students about this myth.

IELTS: 10 Mistakes You Must Avoid by CAMBRIDGE INSTITUTE
We at Cambridge Institute, have observed that the process of studying for IELTS can be overwhelming. It always is of great importance to one’s future and the stakes are usually high. Among countless rules of IELTS it is easy to loose focus and begin drifting in the wrong direction, especially when you have nobody to guide you. This is the reason why people don’t receive the score they really deserve. Here are the top 10 mistakes IELTS candidates make. Just call Cambridge Institute, Ahmedabad to achieve your targeted IELTS score.
Give more answers than necessary
As I have already mentioned in one of the previous articles, instructions are there for a reason. If they say “give one answer” or “answer in 3 words”, this is exactly what the examiners will be looking for, and if they find two answers or four words, points are lost forever.
Write answers in the booklet, not on the Answer Sheet
Of course, writing answers on the booklet margins looks more natural than having to copy them to some special Answer Sheet. Well, surprise the only answers IELTS examiners count are those copied to the Answer Sheet. Every answer written on booklet margins only scores zero.
Lose track of time
During Reading and Writing sections it is candidates’ responsibility to manage their own time. No one will tell you to stop working on the current task and to move forward to the next one. So, in worst case scenario, you could spend all the time working on just one passage, when there are 3 more to go.
Waste a lot of time on one hard question
All IELTS questions are of different difficulty. It is wrong to assume that every next question will be harder than the previous one. This is why getting stuck on one hard question is a bad idea. By moving forward to some easier questions you could win points, which otherwise would be lost.
Read the whole passage first in Reading section
Those passages are not meant to be read. It is enough to scan through the text, noticing what the text is about and what the purpose of each paragraph is. After getting familiar with the passage, it is the time to read questions and look for answers.
Assume they know the answer
There is an old saying “Assumptions are the mother of all mess-ups”. Many people walk right into this trap, by reading the question and assuming that they already know the answer from their experience or general knowledge. What a mistake! The answer is what is written in the passage and not what comes first to your mind. If, for example, the question is “Does smoking cause cancer” and your mind says “Yes” but the passage says “No”, then “No” is the correct answer.
Copy the task in Writing section
Let me list reasons why this would be a mistake. First, instructions forbid this. Second, you don’t get any points for it. Third, it wastes precious time you could use writing something meaningful.
Not checking the answers
It is only human to make mistakes and there is nothing wrong in admitting it. This is a good enough reason to check and double-check your answers if there is time left.
Trying to impress the examiner
What usually happens when a person starts trying to impress the examiner is usually the opposite. Be the best you can at your level, don’t try to claim a higher level you are not at. Don’t start trying to use super complex sentences or big smart words (without being sure what they mean).
Answering with “Yes” or “No”
When examiner is asking you a question, it is not the answer he is after. His goal is to make you speak. As for you, every chance to speak is an opportunity to show how fluent your English is. Answering with “Yes” or “No” ruins every chance of good grade.

From what we have observed at Cambridge Institue, the speaking module in the Ielts (International English Language Testing System) exam would have to be the one that raises the most anxiety among candidates. A lack of preparation, a fear of speaking in English for an extended period, and a lack of awareness of how the scoring scheme works contribute to this anxiety. The impact on a test taker’s score for the speaking module can be significant.
Apart from good preparation, there are also things that can be done during the test itself. Here’s an introduction to some of the things you should do throughout the test to improve your chances of getting the best possible score.
Look and sound confident. Try very hard to appear polite, friendly and – most importantly – relaxed. Looking nervous or, worse still, telling the examiner that you’re feeling nervous only creates a bad impression. Why would you want to let the examiner think that you are not confident? Remember, one of the areas assessed in the speaking module is fluency and coherence, which is effectively a measure of your confidence in using English.
Ask if you don’t hear. If you don’t hear something, ask the interviewer to repeat it. Don’t try to guess what the examiner has said. Simply say, “I’m sorry, could you repeat that, please?” or “I’m sorry, I didn’t catch that.” Asking the examiner to repeat a question is a sign of effective communication. Unlike what many candidates wrongly believe, you will not get a marking penalty if you ask the examiner to repeat a question.
Ask if you don’t understand. If you don’t understand a question, ask the examiner to explain it. It’s better to ask the examiner to explain a question than to guess what he or she is talking about and give incorrect information. Just say, “I’m sorry, I don’t quite follow”, or “I’m sorry, I don’t understand”, or “What does (word you are unsure of) mean?” Remember, you’re not penalised if you ask the examiner to explain a word or a question.
Don’t try to be perfect. A fluent speaker of English can speak smoothly and continuously; in other words, with little or no pausing (or breaks), repetition and corrections when speaking. Therefore, don’t worry about making grammar, vocabulary or pronunciation mistakes. Why? If you concentrate on avoiding grammar errors, for example, in order to get a high grammar score, your fluency will suffer. You’ll speak slower than normal, you might repeat or correct words, or you might include pauses in your speech. All this will result in a low score for fluency.
In other words, during the test, just relax and think about the message you want to communicate. Don’t try to be perfect. Speaking with little or no pausing (or breaks) will have a greater influence on your score than grammar and vocabulary errors. The only grammar point you should really pay attention to during the test is the need to form longish, complex sentences. Do this by combining a number of ideas into the one sentence, rather than saying the same ideas in a number of shorter sentences.
Talk a lot. Show that you’re willing to talk by answering questions as fully as possible. This will definitely improve your score for fluency and coherence. In turn, your score for pronunciation will improve if you can speak smoothly and establish some rhythm in your speech. Similarly, your grammar and vocabulary scores will be higher if you take the opportunity to use longer sentences and show off your range of vocabulary. In other words, quantity – how much you say – can have a major influence on your final score. Stay calm. Your fluency will drop off rapidly if you’re anxious.
Keep it simple. It’s better to be simple and clear, rather than complicated and unclear. The four areas assessed by the examiner are fluency and coherence, grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation. However, one area that’s not directly assessed is the quality of the ideas that you present. Therefore, make it easy on yourself by keeping your ideas simple and uncomplicated, and always talk about something you have the vocabulary for.
Use less common words. Provided it won’t affect your fluency, try to use some less common vocabulary. To get a 7.0 for vocabulary, you only need to use maybe a dozen or so less commonly used words as well as show that your word choice is generally accurate.

How to Improve vocabulary for IELTS By CAMBRIDGE INSTITUTE
Vocabulary expansion is often pursued for a variety of reasons. Individuals may seek to communicate more effectively at work, or college students may be searching for a richer vocabulary to assist understanding and obtaining better grades. Perhaps the learner originates from a non-English speaking background and wishes to learn English for work or study purposes.
Whatever the reason, expanding your vocabulary is within everyone’s reach. Strategies for increasing your vocabulary are many. What should be noted, however, is that we only remember a fraction of what we read. The amount remembered increases to 30% of what you hear; 40% of what you see; and, 60% when you actually perform the task. As such, it is important that we combine all types of activities to obtain maximum learning.
Apart from the above diagram and the types of activities related to retention, other facts to consider when expanding your vocabulary include: Wide reading is extremely important when developing your vocabulary. The richer and more varied the text, the more opportunities you have for increases. Knowledge of word meanings can also be grouped into the amount of words a person knows and the in-depth knowledge of a word. Many people have a wide knowledge of words. That is, they can recognize a significant amount of words, but when it comes to demonstrating meaning, it is often another story.
Knowing a word means knowing context. Words used alone do not provide the full meaning. Depending upon the surrounding words and text, words can take on different meanings Our verbal vocabulary is often less sophisticated than our written vocabulary. This is because verbal communication relies heavily upon non-verbal cues and gestures. As such, it is important that we experience vocabulary in both environments.
Vocabulary development can also occur through exploring similarities and differences amongst related words and keeping written documentation of the words learned, their definitions, and the different ways the words can be used. Word associations (e.g. roots), words that signal a connection to other words and assist meaning (e.g. therefore), and words that have similar sounds but are spelled differently are all techniques that can be explored for improving vocabulary.
Expanding your vocabulary is achievable. It can improve your communication skills and develop reading and writing ability. It does not matter at what stage of your career, your education, or your personal growth, vocabulary develop can benefit everyone. Using vocabulary books written by the director of our Institute is a very effective way of achieving these goals and benefiting from the results.
